What exactly is meant by a salt? Obviously my chemistry book is not referring to sodium chloride so please explain :)

OpenStudy (vane11):

I'm really rusty, but i think I remember something about aids and bases and when trying to find wich is the conjugate the "salts" are the ones that aren't an acid or base so no charge given or taken....? Idk I could be way off and sorry for any typos stupid we page is acting up I can't see what I'm typing

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Whenever an acid reacts with a base, salt is formed. Example: \(\large\sf H_2SO_4 + NaOH = Na_2SO_4 + H_2O\) \(\large\sf HCl+ NaOH = NaCl+ H_2O\) In the above two rections both NaCl and Na2SO4 are salts.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

HCl and H2SO4 are acids and NaOH is base.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\huge\tt Remember:\) Salt is a common term which indicates the product formed bu acid base reaction. NaCl is also a salt commonly called as Table salt or Common salt.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Got it ?

Yep! Thanks a lot :)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

A salt, in most general terms, means a compound that has an ionic bond. It's not restricted to being a product of acid-base reactions.
