Endosymbiotic theory suggests that both mitochondria and chloroplasts were free living prokaryotes which adapted a symbiotic lifestyle with eukaryotic cells. Both mitochondria and chloroplast has their own genetic material and are quite similar to prokaryotic cells. These points support the theory.
