Basically it helps in determining the energy of the collision, and whether or not the molecules hit each other the right way around (the orientation of the collision). All these things help us determine the `Rate of reaction`.

For a reaction to happen, reactant molecules must collide with each other but not every collision leads to chemical reaction. For reaction to take place, the collision between the molecules should be effective i.e. a) The molecules must collide with an energy at least equal to a certain threshold limit (activation energy). b) The orientation of the molecules while colliding must be correct or else the molecules will simply bounce back without reacting.
