OpenStudy (superhelp101):

What substance is acting as the Brønsted-Lowry base in the following reaction? H2SO4 + H20 yields H30+ + HSO4- H2SO4 H2O H30+ HSO4-

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

@Abmon98

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

@Abhisar

OpenStudy (abhisar):

The fundamental concept of `Bronsted-Lowry` theory is that an acid (or Brønsted acid) is defined as being able to lose, or donate a proton (the hydrogen cation, or H+) while a base (or Brønsted base) is defined as a species with the ability to gain, or accept a proton.

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

umm so what do I do ? :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Which one do you think got an extra \(H^+\) after reaction ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

H2SO4 --> HSO4 H2O --> H3O

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

H2SO4 --> HSO4

OpenStudy (abhisar):

This one lost a H+ honey :(

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

how do we know ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

`H2`SO$--->HSO$

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Getting it ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Similarly H2O gained one H+ and became H3O

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

i get it now

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So what will be the answer ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

um what am i looking for

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Bronsted-Lowry Base i.e the one who accepted H+

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

oh then \[h _{2}SO _{4}\]

OpenStudy (abhisar):

How many H is in H2SO4 ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

1 or 2 ??

OpenStudy (abhisar):

two

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now how many are in HSO4 ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

1

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Lost or gained ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

gained

OpenStudy (abhisar):

are you kidding wid me ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

i am sorry i don't know what that is ??

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Abhisar if you had two apples before school and have one apple after school. Then have you lost apple or gained apple ? \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\)

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

well I ate 3 apples

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

I don't gain or lose, I just eat 3 apples that day ;)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

;p ;p

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

it that a trick question ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

no !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Abhisar \(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @Abhisar if you had two apples in your bag before school and have one apple in your bag after school. Then have you lost apple or gained apple ? \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\) \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\)

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

well you lost it cause you ate it. i dunno

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes u lost it honey ! 1<2, so you lost 1 apple

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\sf H_2SO_4\) had 2 protons or \(\sf H^+\), after reaction it became \(\sf HSO_4\) and now have only 1 \(\sf H^+\). So it lost \(\sf H^+\) and therfore is a Bronsted acid. Opposite is with \(\sf H_2O\) and is bronsted base.

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

alright thank very very much!

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

and how in the world did you tag yourself on the post before ? :P

OpenStudy (abhisar):

are you sure you got this one ?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\color{blue}{\text{Originally Posted by}}\) @superhelp101 and how in the world did you tag yourself on the post before ? :P ????????? \(\color{blue}{\text{End of Quote}}\)

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

what i didn't even put all of those question marks?? ahahh this is scary

OpenStudy (abhisar):

you got this question ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

yeah why would i ? you can i ask me another question to make sure. i will probably get it wrong thou :p

OpenStudy (abhisar):

;(

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\sf HNO_3 + NH_3 ⇔ NO_3^- + NH_4^+\) Tell me the bronsted acid in the above reaction

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

O_o you mean the gain or losed protons?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes ! Bronsted acid=The guy who lost proton (H+) Bronsted Base=The guy who gained proton (H+)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\sf HNO_3-->NO_3^-\)

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

okay that is better !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\sf NH_3-->NH_4^+\)

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

First one: it lost a H second one: it gain a proton H+

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes that's correct ! So first one is bronsted-acid and second one is bronsted-base

OpenStudy (abhisar):

But i'll not be there everytime to simplify the equation for you !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

you'll have to simplify it on your own...getting it ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

i get how your question. but not my question which was simplified as H2SO4 --> HSO4 H2O --> H3O i would have simplified it the total opposite can you explain ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

ahhh opps let me fix that !

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

this H2SO4 --> HSO4 H2O --> H3O

OpenStudy (abhisar):

So what's the problem ? Let's figure it out one by one.... H2SO4----how many H can u see in it ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

2

OpenStudy (abhisar):

HSO4---> how many h ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

1

OpenStudy (abhisar):

*H

OpenStudy (abhisar):

yes...so while reaction H2SO4 lost one H+ ion...so bronsted acid....ok ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

ok

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now for H2O--->H3O...explain me

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

uhhhh.... well H20 has 1 H. H30 has 3 H so it gained 2 H which is bronsted Base

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I.m gonna kill you !

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

whyy! lol

OpenStudy (abhisar):

\(\sf \ H_2O\) [water] has one H ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

ahahah 22222222222222222222222222222222222222

OpenStudy (abhisar):

I was talking about the water we find on earth and not on mars !

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

sorry i am on mars :p

OpenStudy (abhisar):

:p

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Don try to be extraterrestrial katy perry :p

OpenStudy (abhisar):

anyways...u got it ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

omg how did you know i was listening to her right now?!?! haha and yes i got it!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

i have sent two spy bots in your room ;p

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46Yt5h6hxWw

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

that song is perfect for me Jkjkjkjkjkjk

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

btw i love katy i went to her concert couple weeks ago ;p

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Just to make sure...temme the acid and base in \(\sf CH_3COOH +H_2O-->CH_3COO^-+H_3O^+\)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Then i'll leave...and if u give the correct answer i'll give you cookies else i'll kill you :p

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

okay i am kinda scared lolz

OpenStudy (abhisar):

??????

OpenStudy (abhisar):

i have only 3 minutes left !

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

ok but i am writing in on paper :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

done ?

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

yeah hold on i trying to send it :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

That's wrong....!!

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Now get ready for being killed !

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

*heartstopped*

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

why is it wrong :''''''(

OpenStudy (abhisar):

well....well....you are safe this time...cz it's correct !

OpenStudy (abhisar):

:D

OpenStudy (superhelp101):

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i'm gunna kill you !!! jk i would never do that to you doc :)

OpenStudy (abhisar):

and btw i like katy perry too ! her voice..her eyes ^_^
