Which element is the most reactive? sodium nickel carbon oxygen

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The ability of atoms to "hold on" to their electrons is a basis for being inert (non-reactive), so you have to follow the ionization trends of the periodic table. Which of these takes the least energy to ionize?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wouldn't it be oxygen? It has less till it is full?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, that would be the least reactive, wouldn't it..

OpenStudy (aaronq):

nope, it would be a metal. The most reactive elements lie in the first and second periods. They're highly reactive because they have only 1 or 2 valence electrons which are easily lost (easily in terms of energy needed to ionize them).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sodium then.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yes
