OpenStudy (help!!!!):

Help me simplify this

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

\[\frac{36x^2\left(3x+y\right)\left(3x+y\right)-\left(3x-y\right)\left(3x-y\right)}{\left(3x+y\right)\left(3x-y\right)}\]

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

@SolomonZelman @mathstudent55 @ganeshie8

OpenStudy (agreene):

\[\frac{36x^2\left(3x+y\right)\color{red}{\cancel{\left(3x+y\right)}}-\left(3x-y\right)\color{red}{\cancel{\left(3x-y\right)}}}{\color{red}{\cancel{\left(3x+y\right)}\cancel{\left(3x-y\right)}}}\]

OpenStudy (agreene):

\[36x^2(3x+y)-(3x-y)\]

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

crap that means I did something wrong..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hm? you can't do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can't cross out both 3x+y and 3x-y on top, can't factor it out. there's a minus sign in the middle.

OpenStudy (agreene):

yeh ur right you cant lol

OpenStudy (agreene):

\[\frac{36x^2(3x+y)^2-(3x-y)^2}{(3x+y)(3x-y)}=\frac{36x(3x+y)^2}{(3x+y)(3x-y)}-\frac{(3x-y)^2}{(3x+y)(3x-y)}\] \[36x(3x+y)(3x-y)^{-1}-(3x-y)(3x+y)^{-1}\]

OpenStudy (agreene):

didn't catch the - sign the 1st time, just copied and slashed stuff lol

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

thanks but that wasnt the original question, that was what I did the simplify..

OpenStudy (agreene):

I don't follow, you asked to simplify that--I did it wrong the 1st time, that second time is better--but it might be able to be reduced a bit more, but i dont think so

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

no this was the original question

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

\[\frac{36x^2}{9x^2-y^2}+\frac{3x+y}{3x-y}-\frac{3x-y}{3x+y}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then yes your simplification was correct :) @HELP!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but, on the denominator, it would be 36x^2 + 3x+y)^2 + (3x-y)^2

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

but this is the answer...

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

\[\frac{12x}{\left(3x-y\right)}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

have you considered distribute the fraction on top?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and noticed it's not 36x^2(3x+y) it's 36x^2 + (3x+y)^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\large \frac{ 36x^2 + (3x+y)^2 - (3x-y)^2 }{ (3x+y)(3x-y) }\] \[\large \frac{ 36x^2 + (3x^2 +6xy +y^2) - (3x^2 -6xy+y^2) }{ (3x+y)(3x-y) }\] distribute out this negative sign. \[\large \frac{ 36x^2 + 3x^2 +6xy +y^2 - 3x^2 +6xy-y^2 }{ (3x+y)(3x-y) }\] \[\large \frac{ 36x^2 +12xy }{ (3x+y)(3x-y) }\] \[\large \frac{ 12x(3x+y) }{ (3x+y)(3x-y) }\] \[\large \frac{ 12 }{ (3x-y) }\]

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

OHHH MY GOD, I GOTCHA

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

Thank you SOO MUCH!!!
