The number of vacant orbitals in the valance shell of an atom of element with Z= 14 is A 1 B 7 C 5 D 6

hartnn (hartnn):

@nincompoop @Preetha

hartnn (hartnn):

Z=14 2,8,4 --->14

hartnn (hartnn):

and outermost shell can contain atmost 18 electrons, yes ? but it only has 4

hartnn (hartnn):

so, 14 vacant orbitals ? that seems wrong :P

hartnn (hartnn):

14 is number of electrons...any ideas how to find vacant orbitals ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Confused What is vacant orbital means . I. Know element is silicon

Elsa213 (elsa213):

@sarah786 wut answer do u think is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I can't figure it out . 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p2

hartnn (hartnn):

ok so out of K 1s 2 2 L 2s 2 2 + 6 = 8 2p 6 M 3s 2 2 + 6 + 10= 18 3p 6 3d these 6 orbitals 3 are occupied

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And orbitals are sub shell s

hartnn (hartnn):

K and L will be completely occupied for M, out of 4, 2 goes in 3s 2 goes in 3p and only 3d is vacant orbital!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Its 5 got it yay thank you so much hartnncand ya said ya dunno even c of chemistry :)

hartnn (hartnn):

5 are occupied orbitals 1 is vacant!

hartnn (hartnn):

everything i posted above, i have just googled it, learned it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D is a single orbital ? Then what dxy dyz dzx called ?

hartnn (hartnn):

lol, thats deep....i don't know that.. :P

Elsa213 (elsa213):

XD

hartnn (hartnn):

from wiki "The simple names s orbital, p orbital, d orbital and f orbital refer to orbitals with angular momentum quantum number ℓ = 0, 1, 2 and 3 respectively. "

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OK got it its 1 because s p d f are orbitals thank you so much :)

hartnn (hartnn):

finally we got it ! :) welcome ^_^

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lots of candies for you :p

hartnn (hartnn):

*shares candies with sarah and elsa ^_^*

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you . gtg to prepare eng vocab . thanks again :)

Elsa213 (elsa213):

:D tank u ^_^
