OpenStudy (anonymous):

How many liters of chlorine gas, at 278 K and 1.1 atm, will react with 25.6 grams of potassium metal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

K + Cl2 ---> 2 KCl

OpenStudy (somy):

\[PV=nRT\]

OpenStudy (somy):

\[V=\frac{ nRT }{ P }\]

OpenStudy (somy):

T= 278K R= constant value 0.082057 n= mole =mass/Molecular mass P= 1.1 atm find the mole first you are given mass of potassium metal and molecular mass you can get from periodic table

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait i dont understand how to get the mole

OpenStudy (somy):

Mole= mass/ molecular mass

OpenStudy (somy):

oh wait a sec

OpenStudy (somy):

rather there is more to do just find the mole of potassium metal first

OpenStudy (somy):

then i'll tell u what to do next

OpenStudy (somy):

coz you'll need to get mole of chlorine using mole of potassium

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 39.1?

OpenStudy (somy):

39.1 is molecular mass of potassium

OpenStudy (somy):

mass= 25.6 grams

OpenStudy (somy):

so now find the mole

OpenStudy (anonymous):

25.6/31.9 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

*39.1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got 0.65

OpenStudy (somy):

good

OpenStudy (somy):

now K + Cl2 ---> 2 KCl this is not balanced yet so balance it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

would it be 12k+c12 --> 12kc1

OpenStudy (somy):

Cl = its CL chlorine's element l is not 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry im not sure how to balance a chemical equation

OpenStudy (somy):

K + Cl2 ---> 2 KCl K= potassium Cl= chlorine look at right side of the arrow and left side of the arrow right side 2KCl which means there are 2 of K atoms and 2 of Cl atoms left side K + Cl2 which means there is only 1 K atom and there are 2 of Cl atoms now see the difference there is 1 K atom on the left side while there are 2 K atoms on the right side so ratio is 1:2 to balance it = we need to equal it meaning ratio has to be 2:2 so we can jut multiply K on the left side by 2 meaning \(2K\) + Cl2 ---> 2 KCl

OpenStudy (somy):

is it clear?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im going to analyze this so that i fully understand it. but i do get the gist of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so after its balanced, whats the next step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (somy):

look at the ratio between K and Cl (on the left side) (by looking at coefficients= numbers before elemnts)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2:1?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is it 2:2

OpenStudy (somy):

no its 2:1 (sorry i was away)

OpenStudy (somy):

before K number is 2 before Cl there is no number which means its 1 so ratio is 2:1 now that means 2 of K give = 0.65 mole how about 1 = X? X= 0.65/2 X= mole of Cl

OpenStudy (somy):

now you have mole of Cl and the rest of the info is given so use formula that i gave you above PV=nRT V=nRT/P n= is mole that you just got for chlorine
