determine the oxidation number of phosphorous in PO43-

OpenStudy (mayankdevnani):

\[\large \bf PO_4^{3-}\] We know that oxidation no.of oxygen is -2(generally/average) Let the oxidation no.of phosphorus be x. Therefore,we get \[\large \bf Sum~of~total~oxidation~no.=Total~charge\] so, \[\large \bf x+4(-2)=-3\] \[\large \bf x-8=-3\] \[\large \bf x=+5\] Hence,Oxidation no.of phosphorus is +5.
