A certain skin lotion is a fine mixture of water and various oils. This lotion is cloudy and cannot be separated into oil and water by filtration. Moreover, its components do not separate when left standing. What type of mixture is it?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

COLLOIDAL DISPERSIONS: ARE MIXTURES WITH CHARACTERISTICS PART WAY BETWEEN A SOLUTION AND A SUSPENSION. COLLOIDAL DISPERSIONS MAY APPEAR HOMOGENEOUS BUT ARE ACTUALLY HETEROGENEOUS. COLLOIDAL DISPERSIONS DO NOT SETTLE WHEN LEFT STANDING UNDISTURBED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. COLLOIDAL DISPERSIONS DO SHOW THE TYNDALL EFFECT. Sorry for all caps...

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Colloids are mixtures with particle sizes that consist of clumps of molecules. The particles have dimensions between 2 to 1000 nanometers. The colloid looks homogeneous to the naked eye. Fog and milk are examples of colloids. Colloids frequently appear "murky" or "opaque". The particles are large enough to scatter light. You have experience with the way fog interacts with the light from car headlights. Colloids generally do not separate on standing. They are not separated by filtration.
