Which reaction occurs at the cathode of a lead-storage battery that is being recharged?

@Kainui @nincompoop

OpenStudy (kainui):

Hmm, so it's being recharged, what does this mean in terms of voltage?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it should be going from a lesser to higher voltage right? @Kainui

OpenStudy (kainui):

You tell me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think I'm right haha

OpenStudy (kainui):

So it looks to me like you really only have 2 different reactions here since A and D are the same and B and C are the same, only reversed. So that might help you narrow it down.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in that picture it'd be the left beaker but how do I know the equation?

OpenStudy (kainui):

Why do you say it's the left beaker?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because the cathode has lead and it's being charged right..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Kainui

OpenStudy (kainui):

Nope, cause on the left you can see that the battery has a resistance on it, that's what it does when it's being used normally. But we're charging it up, which is the case on the right, which is the reverse reaction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh ok I see... but I still don't know how to tell the reaction.
