you can only simplify like terms
so LHS =
6 - 9 + 8x
= -3 + 8x
= 8x - 3
(the order does not matter - i uust put the positive value first

in a similar fashion RHS = 8x + 14
now are the 2 sides equal?

this is where i got to, and got confused... if you add the opposite it cancels out the 8x... what do i do!

what you have done is correct
- and you have ended up with an absurdity 8x cannot be equal to 8x + 14
- so the original statement can never be true
