fresh saliva pH 8 ..then liberates CO2 and pH becomes 6 ... NaHCO3 stabilizes ph of saliva ... can u make understand link btw these two lines please em pure in acid base concept .. how NaHCO3 stabalizing ph ? plus NaHCO3 in pancreactic juice neutralizes acidity of chyme ..but here in saliva pH moving from basic to acid totally confused please help

I don't believe I know how to do this... But then again, I can't really understand the question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm its ok

OpenStudy (yanasidlinskiy):

I'm not that good at this stuff. Although, I think @Abhisar might know!!:) Or @uri

Co2 leaving makes it more acidic by releasing h2 molecules. When co3 is added, it bonds with the h2 molecules making it more basic. So it increases the population of oh- molecules, while decreasing h+ molecules.

not getting it :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Excuse me, i meant h3o+ is decreased, so it becomes more basic. Simply put, oxygen is electronegative and attracts the h2+ part of h3o+, whenever you have lonely oxygens , theyll generally try to form hydrogen bonds with h3o+ in water, this is called being hydrophilic.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok,first of all, u know ph of 7 is neutral, right? Ph less than 7 is basic ph less than 7 is acidic. Salivas acidic if it has more h3o+ and basic if it has more oh-. Basically youre taking h3 from h3o+ and o3 from NaHCO3 and combining to get 3 oh- atoms. Thats gonna get basic fast

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When it says NaHCO3 stabilizes ph, they mean return it to ph 7, to make it more basic. Same as in the pancreas. Removing co2 on the other hand, steals two oxygens from oh-, less oh- means more acidic. Thats why ph went from 8 to 6. I gotta go, but hopefully that helped.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I meant ph greater than 7 is basic, sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ph went from 8 to 6 in saliva and went from acidic to basic in intestine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where frm H3O+ came?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Co2 made ph go from 8 to 6. NaHCO3 makes it go from 6 to 7 more basic. Ph of less than 7 means more h3o+. When you remove co2 from h2o you get an extra hydrogen. That leaves it to bond with another water molecule giving you h3o+. Sorry, really gotta go. Got a test on monday.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

got it .. :) thank you so much:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry don't know

i got te answer thnk u fr gving responc
