how do the following physical properties depend on the strength of imf's forces? not sure what its asking. a) surface tension, viscosity, melting point, boiling point, vapor pressure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

example, the stronger the IMF forces are, the higher the boiling point of the liquid, since you'll need more energy to break those strong intra molecular forces

Im still unsure what to put as an answer? can u explain to me .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well, it's different for each one of them. Do you understand what IMFs are? They are the interactions between the different neighboring particles, which are the forces that join together the molecules. By being stronger forces, the molecules are held more tightly. Think of it as a chain of people holding their hands. If the people in the chain hold their hands really strongly, then it'll take more energy form you to break apart the chain, and vice versa.

Using this same example, let's think about viscosity. If the Intermolecular forces in the liquid are stronger, then the molecules are held together tigher, therefore, they flow less. So they have a higher viscosity. look at this website. It covers most of the ones yo have in your homework. http://lessons.chemistnate.com/effects-of-intermolecular-forces.html
