How much magnesium reacted? Lab results: Mass of beaker: 41.9293 g Mass of magnesium: .8712 g Mass of beaker & magnesium chloride after hotplate: 42.9318 g Mass of beaker & magnesium after heating:42.4513
Can you provide some background on the procedure?
We added 10-15 mL of 3.0 M HCL until no more magnesium remained unreacted. Put beaker onto hotplate and allowed product to dry. then but into drying oven overnight. Took out the beaker and set up a ring and wire gauze. Put the beaker on the wire guaze with a bunsen burner underneath. Heated the beaker until no liquid remains and then let cool.
Okay, cool. So the reaction is between Mg and HCl. Have you written and balanced an equation for this?
No
you need it, can you write it?
would the begining just be Mg2 + HCl -> What would the second half be then?
\(\sf Mg+HCl\rightarrow MgCl_2+H_2 \)
can you balance it?
\[Mg + 2HCl \rightarrow MgCl _{2} + H _{2}\]
good stuff. haha now that i look at the information again, there are actually two ways you can solve this. One would be using the amount of magnesium chloride, the other would be simpler and you would just subtract the masses of magnesium metal before and after.
Do you wanna do the easier one?
haha ok. easier is always better
Mass of beaker: 41.9293 g Mass of beaker & magnesium after heating:42.4513 We find the final mass of Mg (what is left over) Mass of Mg final = 42.4513 g - 41.9293 g = 0.522 g and we have the initial amount Mass of magnesium: .8712 g (initial) Mg used = initial - final ---------------------------------------------------------- Though this method assumes that no Mg was lost elsewhere, e.g. when transferring material.
Any magnesium that reacted became magnesium chloride.
So the answer is 0.3492?
thats the mass of Mg that reacted.
Assuming no mass was lost elsewhere. We can do the more accurate one if you want - for this we would utilize the equation we wrote before.
thank you so much!
I think this one is good for now
no problem!
