Well lets look at the points I have (3,-8) and (4,-5) the second number represents a y-value the first number represents a x-value and together they correspond to each other in that pair (x,y) So anyways we can let \[(x_1,y_1)=(3,-8) \text{ and } (x_2,y_2)=(4,-5) \] Then plug into the formula above and simplify. replace x_1 with 3 replace y_1 with -8 replace x_2 with 4 replace y_2 with -5
