(physics 2 help please)in a square config of fixed point charges shown, where q1=+6.3 uC and q2 = 2.1uC, each side has length a = 2.35mm. Find the x and y components of the electrostatic force experienced by the charge +2q1 (upper left)

Think about the force on 2q1 due to each of the other charges in turn and draw its vector representation on the diagram so you are clear about the direction of each force. Then use coulombs law to calculate the magnitude of each force. Finally resolve each force along x or y in turn and add the x or y components to find the components of the resultant force.

i did all of that already, i am just trying to figure out how to turn it into x and y components properly. i did f= kq1q1/r^2 i know the components of two of em because either the x or y is 0. im not totally sure how to break the top left and bottom right into components. i did a^2 +b^2=C^2 to get the distance, then did the force equation. now, how do i break it into components?

the force on the top left charge due to the bottom right charge lies along the square diagonal, right ?

okay, and the angle that direction makes with the y axis is 45 degrees so if a vector F lies along the diagonal, its component in the y direction will be Fcos45

In general, if you want the component of a vector along a particular direction, it is Acostheta where A is the length of the vector and theta is the angle between the vector and the direction you're interested in.
