PREDICTING REDOX REACTIONS: Chlorine Gas is bubbled into a solution of sodium bromide. Please help predict products in an equation and balance equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have sodium, bromide, water and chlorine in solution. what would you expect to produce?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well thats what really confuses me about redox is that i dont know exactly how to find the products. I know it will probably produce NaCl, but i only guess that because it common. im guessing the products would be --->OH(-)+HBr? I didnt include salt because it is soluble

OpenStudy (anonymous):

electronegativity of chlorine is more than bromine.so Cl2 gain a electron from Br- and become Cl- and Br- lose a electron and become Br2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so would the net ionic equation be this? \[Cl _{2} ^{0}+NaBr--->Cl _{2} ^{-}+Br _{2}^{+}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.....lol ok what did i do wrong? is it because it isnt balanced?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no you'r reagents are wrong.Cl2 when gain electrons produce Cl-
