Try to get a good idea in your head of what actually happens first.

The thing to realise is that when the dog catches up with the man, they will both have travelled the same distance.
If it took the man a time T to cover the distance, the dog must cover the same distance in a time T-2.3, because it sets off later.
That is enough to find T, and hence the distance.
