What is the reason behind the high surface tension of water? The density of the water molecule helps it to cohere to nearby water molecules, forming a skin over it. The polarity of the water molecule helps it to cohere to nearby water molecules, forming a skin over it. The weight of the water molecule helps it to cohere to nearby water molecules, forming a skin over it. i think its the secound one

Water has such a high surface tension because of HYDROGEN BONDS! The molecules of the water bind together and are very difficult to separate because of the strong dipole-dipole connection that occurs. And water is most dense at 4 degrees Celsius!
