If you have two unknowns you need two equations to solve the unknowns.
3x + 4y = 12 convert into slope y-intercept form: y = -3/4 x + 4 slope: -3/4 y-intercept: 4 x-intercept: 0 = -3/4 x + 4 3/4 x = 4 x = 16/3 the line has a slope of -3/4 and passing through the points (0,4) and (16/3, 0)

nincompoop - but you haven't solved for x and y (you need another equation for that). When I see the word "solve", I think it means solve for for the unknowns. It seems gby1 wasn't very descriptive with that question.
@Wolf is right, the question is not descriptive enough. What nincompoop found is where the function intersects with the axes, but those are not the definite solutions for x and y. If the question was to solve for a variable it would look like this: Solve for x: x=(12-4y)/3 Solve for y: y=(12-3x)/4
3x+4y=12 x/4+4/3=1 x=4, y=0 x=3,y=1/3 x=2, y=3/2 x=1, y=9/2 x=0, y=3
