Is the boiling point of water and salt water the same? Why or why not?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Adding salt elevates the boiling point of water i.e boiling point of salt water is greater than boiling point of pure water.

Thank you abihisar 😃

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Do you want to know the reason too ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes please

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Water boils when its partial pressure becomes equal to that of atmospheric pressure. For pure water it happens at 100°C. Now adding salt to water decreases the density of water particles at the surface so more temperature is required in order to achieve the same vapor pressure (i.e pressure equal to atmospheric pressure).
