I WILL GIVE MEDALS!!!!!!!!!! Which of the following is not true of theories and laws? A law has no exceptions. A hypothesis might eventually lead to a theory. All theories will eventually become laws. A theory might be proven wrong.

Let's take each one 1) A law can have only one exception. No. Strictly speaking, a law should have no exceptions within the constraints of the law. By that I mean that a lot of laws are only true under certain circumstances e.g. Ohm's law, Coulombs law etc which are known as empirical laws. Having said that there is a very famous universal law which, even when it was published, was know to have an exception! That law was Newton's law of universal gravitation!!. Newton was well aware that his 'law' could not be applied to describe the motion of the planet Mercury. Yet it was still called a law by all those who accepted it as such. Ultimately, his law was shown to be just an accurate approximation to the truth when Einstein produced his version of gravity in 1915. 2) A hypothesis is the same as a theory. No. A hypothesis is a sort of educated guess which may or may not support an existing theory. The two are not quite the same thing. 3) A theory might be proven wrong Yes!!!! Not long ago almost every educated person on the planet believed in the theory that the universe revolved around a stationary earth; in the theory that the earth was flat; in the theory the there were only 4 elements that made up everything in the universe etc etc ....... 4) All theories will eventually become laws. No!! Check out the answers to 3 above!! Also and this is something I don't know the answer to, Newton's law of gravity is still called a law. But Einstein's theory of relativity STILL does not have the status of a law, even though it has shown that Newton's law is an incomplete description of gravity.!! Go figure!!
