Why do atoms share electrons in covalent bonds?

OpenStudy (calculusfunctions):

To gain more stability. However the electrons are not always shared equally.

non-metals won't want to lose those electrons because they naturally tend to gain electrons. so they would try to pull the electrons from the other atom but won't be able to and thus sharing occurs.
