why does aluminum have more than 8 valence electrons

Aluminum's electron configuration is: 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p1 WHICH ADD TO 13 this is basically counting the separate blocks in the periodic table or you can just look at the atomic number 13 which is the proton and ELECTRONS
