Which explains why carbon (C) is such a versatile element?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Carbon is so versatile because of its ability to form single, double, and triple bonds. Its ability to do this is directly related to the number of valence electrons in it's outer most shell. Since carbon needs 8 electrons to fill that valence shell it can for up to four bonds- making it more "available" (versatile) to connect with other elements.
