Any help would be GREAT!!! Let f(x) = x + 2 and g(x) = x2 Find ( g o f)(-5) A. -3 B. 9 C. -10 D. 49

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hey Stew's mom c: \[\Large\rm f(x)=x+2, \qquad\qquad g(\color{orangered}{x})=(\color{orangered}{x})^2\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Let's use the other notation for composition, I think it's easier to understand.\[\Large\rm (g \circ f)(x)= g\left(f(x)\right)\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So we're starting with our function: \[\Large\rm g(\color{orangered}{x})=(\color{orangered}{x})^2\] and we're replacing the orange x's with f(x):\[\Large\rm g(\color{orangered}{f(x)})=(\color{orangered}{f(x)})^2\]\[\Large\rm g(\color{orangered}{f(x)})=(\color{orangered}{x+2})^2\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

And then we're evaluating this composition at x=-5,\[\Large\rm g(\color{orangered}{f(-5)})=(\color{orangered}{-5+2})^2\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

What do you think? :O Confusing?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea I'm kinda lost!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Got it right! It was A Thanks for you help!

zepdrix (zepdrix):

No, not A :'c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops I was meaning B! Sorry #zepdrix
