how would i find out if an equation is horizontal or oblique from the equation f(x)=2x^2-x-2 / 2x^2-x-10

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Hey Austin :) Welcome to OpenStudy! \[\Large\rm \frac{\color{orangered}{2x^2}-x-2}{\color{orangered}{2x^2}-x-10}\]To determine whether the function has `horizontal` or `oblique` asymptotes, we need only look at these leading terms.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

The function will have `oblique` asymptotes when the `degree of the top` is exactly one greater than the `degree of the bottom`.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

In this problem however, our top and bottom are of `equal` degree, yes?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

When they are of equal degree like this, |dw:1413056479349:dw|
