medals for the gals only A mathematics journal has accepted 14 articles for publication. However, due to budgetary restraints only 9 articles can be published this month. How many ways can the journal editor assemble 9 of the 14 articles for publication? A. 726,485,760 B. 14 C. 2,002 D. 126

its a simple combination question. from 14 articles he has to choose 9 and it does not matter which he chooses. so its just 14C9

Have you been introduced to combinations yet?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay what differs from permutation and combination is that in permutation order matters. and in Combinations order does not matter. So in this case. the Journalist can choose any 9 articles of the 14 articles he has. so you have to use a calculator for this and there should be a key on it. "nCr" or \[C _{(n,r)}\] n is the total number of the something, and r is the number of choices. so for this question its simply 14C9=2002

OpenStudy (sissyedgar):

yea, "gals only"... okaaay
