What are oxidation/reduction reaction and how are they associated with the metabolic process of living organisms?

OpenStudy (secret-ninja):

Oxidation Reaction- Any chemical reaction in which a material gives up electrons, as when the material combines with oxygen. Burning is an example of rapid oxidation; rusting is an example of slow oxidation. Reduction Reaction- Any chemical reaction that involves the gaining of electrons. Specifically, it refers to the side that accepts electrons. When iron reacts with oxygen it forms a chemical called rust. In that example, the iron is oxidized and the oxygen is reduced. Reduction is the opposite of oxidation. Catabolism is the set of metabolic processes that break down large molecules. These include breaking down and oxidizing food molecules. The purpose of the catabolic reactions is to provide the energy and components needed by anabolic reactions.
