OpenStudy (anonymous):

what is a valence electron, im so confused i know its the main group but the side on or up and down

OpenStudy (mrnood):

A valence electron is normally the electrons in the 'outer shell' of the electron cloud. The group 1 metals have just 1 in their outer shell - thus they can easily 'give it up' to make a become a positive ion and are therefore reactive metals. Th group 18 'inert gases have a full shell and therefore are not easily reacted with (hence 'inert')
