In a molecule of methane, carbon (having four valence electrons) binds to four hydrogen atoms. How many lone pairs of electrons will be represented in the Lewis structure of methane? four two one zero

I really need help! :C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I will give medals and fan whoever answers! :c

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If they have the correct answer, or explain it to me.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Can you draw the lewis structure of methane?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I cant. I dont have access to anything that can do it.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Each hydrogen has 1 electron, carbon has 4 electrons For Drawing it, You must obey the octet rule: Meaning carbon should have 8 electrons around it each hydrogen should have 2 electrons around it A line represents 2 electrons If you dont know how to draw the lewis structure watch one or both of these videos they should explain it to you reasonably well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZlnzyHahvo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulyopnxjAZ8

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

If you still dont understand feel free to ask and I can go through it more thoroughly with you.

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Also just a quick definition, Lone pair electrons are a set of two electrons that are not bonded to anything and usually belong to a heteroatom (Any atom that is not carbon or hydrogen)

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

and by not bonded to anything I mean not used for bonding
