Chemiosmosis is the movement of ions across a selectively permeable membrane, down their electrochemical gradient. More specifically, it relates to the generation of ATP by the movement of hydrogen ions across a membrane during cellular respiration or photosynthesis. *Sources from the Internet
Both the mitochondria and the chloroplast use chemiosmosis to produce ATP. In this process, electrons flowing down the electron transport system provide energy that is used to pump protons from the inside of the mitochondria/chloroplast to the space between the inner and outer organelle membranes. This produces an imbalance of protons across the membrane. As the protons flow back across the membrane to the inside of the organelle, they travel through an enzyme called an ATP synthase, that uses the current of protons to produce ATP, much like a water wheel being turned by a flow of water from above.
