Religion is considered a faith. Does anyone know why that is?
I have the answer to this question, I'm just curious to see what you religious beings have to say for this question.
Weak, religion can be faith, or not faith based. Have you forgotten history? Logic based theology rose purely from the Age of Enlightenment, and even before that the Greeks had logical arguments.
Well, with that said I suppose I should give you my answer to my question. Bertrand Russell said Where there is evidence, no one speaks of faith. We do not speak of faith that two and two are four or that the Earth is round. We only speak of faith when we wish to substitute emotion for evidence. This is how I interpret this quote: What he is saying, or trying to say, is that religion is not evidence. It is faith. And faith is not evidence. Therefore it can't be considered reliable. If something isn't reliable then why believe in it? Because you have faith?
Russell assumes a state where one cannot be convinced of truths. We all exist on the assumption that we are real, so by Russell's definition we are to be faith based and reality is non-existent. This is bogus, Russell knew this in the end as well. We live in a system completely based on our own observations which become tied into one. As K.G. proved mathematically; mathematical systems exist in a self-referential base as well. This shows we can be CONVINCED of existing truths, which is not by faith is made on rational grounds.
* EDIT: As K.G. proved mathematically; mathematical systems exist in a self-referential base, and are impossible to exist otherwise.
Faith is believing in something you don't physically see.
My personal view is faith has a lot to do with your our perception and how they relate to one's environment. An example in the Old Testament Moses saw a burning bush, not being consumed, approached and heard audio. Today we may call this episode an hallucination, it was Moses faith in his perception and what followed that made it real. More modern occurrences are when individuals have messages from God and follow them and are latter considered Saints. I used to say if seeing is believing you better believe what your seeing. I once retorted I hope you don't have to see Hell to believe it, I was sadden latter that I was a little rough on him.
@KenLJW The Old Testament, in my mind, was most likely written by the king or whoever ruled at the time to control people. Why do you think the Ten Commandments where made? It made people feel something, that something being fear. The Ten Commandments says that one who steals will be punished to eternity in hell. Obviously this made the people back then not want to steal or do wrong because they didn't know what hell was. The stories made by the "religious leaders" about hell and Satan where made to scare the citizens. They obviously weren't as intelligent as we are now... Moving on to what @Opcode said...My perception of that quote was obviously way off, or you just said something that feel to be true due to how you said it. It's very easy to believe something that's total BS when it's said in a way that might sound right. The words you use make me believe that you're right, and the fact that you provided a sort of evidence makes me believe you more. I honestly don't know what to say other than good job man; you proved me, somewhat, wrong. However I still will use this quote because not everyone knows what it actually means ;) I can fool many with that quote, and that what I intend to do. That's actually what I intended to do with this question, but everything seemed to backfire when you replied...Again, good job
Actually it was under King Josiah and the Priest, about 640-600 BCE, that the Deutoronomistic writing, Deuteronomy through 2nd Kings, came into being. Prior to this it was the Mosaic Law, Genesis through Numbers, was in effect and the consequence of breaking the Law was death, no mention on Hell. This was a real consequence and it wasn't until much latter, possibly not until Christianity that other spiritually consequences were imposed, whether on believes them or not is of no consequence because I know there are spiritual influence in the world today, both good and bad. In fact they're so hidden that people may not even know there under their influences even the secular world, some denominations call it spiritual warfare but I know it's just on group vying another for power in this world.
@Timmyk14 my post is public, anyone can feel free to argue that I am spouting blather, however if they want to argue that, I will naturally disagree with them as I have the right too. Philosophy of mathematics is a little more complex than just one person being correct, I am merely showing that Russel had criticism against him, criticism that was valid. To what I see faith is of a virtue, faith can be steaming from pure reason or pure emotion. For most me like to believe it is of both, that reason lies behind ones faith. Using this quote is utterly childish if you cannot defend it, as it notes you have a fundamental interpretation of religion, that religion is in a ecosystem that has no variables. Which is obliviously wrong.
