A roller coaster moves 85 m horizontally, then travels 45 m at an angle of 30° above the horizontal. What is its displacement from its starting point. Use graphical techniques

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There will be two displacements one vertical displacement and another horizontal displacement , vertical displacement=22.5m and horizontal displacement=123.97m. |dw:1416497337456:dw|

Agree with yuvraj77's methodology, but the horizontal displacement of cos(30)*45 is 38.97m, which, when added to 65m, equals 103.97m.

dude its 85 and not 65

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Whoops. You are correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1417963552647:dw|you have broken the actual displacement into its components but the question is asking about net displacement which is (( 45sin30)^2+(85+45cos30)^2)^1/2m. therefore net displacement is ((45sin30)^2+(85+45cos30)^2)^1/2
