For this problem, you need to use the Pythagorean Theorem. You know that the base of the triangle with height twelve is 7/2 because the altitude falls in the middle of the square and then you use the two side lengths to the solve for the third. a^2 +b^2=c^2

Yes that sum is the square of the slant length. Thus to find the slant length, you would have to take the square root of the sum. Also, note that the length c, in the equation is always the longest side of the triangle(opposite the 90 degree angle)
