i know that opposites attract and that they always have a north and south pole, which is how compasses work, they are repelled by the south pole and attracted to the north pole

On a magnet, the poles are the strongest because the forces that move towards each other relates to Coulombs Law, where the force of attraction or repulsion depends on the strength of the pole and inversely proportional to the distance between them. Since magnetism is a force, the force greatly depends upon the distance of separation. THis explains why magnets are weaker in the middle.

You know that like charges repel, and they will always have a "north-seeking" and "south-seeking" side to them where the distance between the charges is the greatest.
