What is effective nuclear charge? Explain how this influences the properties of the elements on the periodic table. Also, explain what screening or shielding is and how it changes the effective nuclear charge. Effective Nuclear Charge is the charge that is felt by the valence electrons after you take into account the shielding. Shielding refers to the inner electrons that are pushing the outer electrons away from the nucleus. @Preetha @ShadowLegendX I think this needs more, but i don't know how to explain?
this explains fairly well https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvSmfgxCSNQ ask more specific questions though
The questions is what my teacher gave us
no i mean, try to answer the question yourself, but if theres something (more specific than the definition) in there you dont understand, ask away
If the effective nuclear energy is larger, the atomic radius is smaller correct?
@aaronq
yes
And it is because the inner electrons are repelling the outer electrons away from the nucleus?
yep, all electrons (negative) are attracted to the nucleus (positive), but all electrons repel each other
Thank you! I'm not too good at explaining things, and for some reason this assignment was very confusing to me. :)
no problem! you could think about these objects like opposite sides of a bar magnet - in terms of repulsion/attraction.
