What would happen when you mix hydrochloric acid(HCl) with sodium hydroxide (NaOH)? and Estimate the pH of the resulting solution if you mixed equal amounts of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).

OpenStudy (aaronq):

what type of compounds are HCl and NaOH?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

HCI is an acid where as NaOH is base.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

so what does a general acid-base reaction make?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um salt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do i estimate the pH of the resulting solution?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

water and a salt

OpenStudy (aaronq):

pH is the negative logarithm of the concentration of hydronium ions (acid), \(pH=-log[H_3O^+]\) so if you have equal amounts of acid and base, you achieve neutrality, pH=7. \([OH^-]=[H_3O^+]\) at pH=7

Ok i understand now, thank you so much!
