-3x+2y>5y+9

OpenStudy (hyper):

So whats the question regarding this inequality?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am lost when it comes to this and have been trying to figure out how to solve this

OpenStudy (hyper):

This inequality has two variables and so, it is unsolvable if the two variables are unknown? Do you need to find x or y?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it wanted to know which is equivalent and they gave me 4 answers but i dont know how to solve it to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3x +2y > 5y + 9 -3x > 5y (-2y) + 9 -3x > 3y + 9 multiply across by -1 change sign 3x < -3y + 9 divide by 3 x < -y + 3

OpenStudy (hyper):

Does that answer fit any of the four answers they gave you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no but let me see what you did so i can try and figure it out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so do i divide by 3 for all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is actually x > -y-3 sorry

OpenStudy (anonymous):

see i got y>x+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

none of the answers but mine were one of the options

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it cant be thats not one of my options

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well maybe if i solved for y then it would be -x-3>y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, step by step, here we go: step 1: subtract 2y from both sides -3x +2y (-2y) > 5y (-2y) + 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

did that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

gives: -3x > 3y + 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

step 2: multiply across by -1 to get rid of minus sign -1 (-3x ) > -1(3y + 9) => 3x > -3y -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why multiply by -1 thats where you lost me

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now need to reverse sign when you multiply by a negative number so it becomes: 3x < -3y -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I multiplied by -1 becuase I have -3x but I want x to be positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok that makes sense

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so final step is divide both sides of 3x < -3y -9 by 3 to get x < -y -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then take a bow!LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that but here are my answers: A: y>x+3 B;Y>-x-3 C. y<x-3 D. y<-x-3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay we will get there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i hope so i have been at this for 4 hours!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i do nt see a -y anywhere?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so all answers are in terms of y, so we need to find answer in terms of y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so lets add 3 to both sides of our answer to cancel -3 as follows: x (+ 3) < -y -3 (+3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok give me one sec im doing it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we have x+3 < -y so to get ri of y we multiply across by -1: -1(x + 3) < -1(- y) -x -3 > y dont forget sign changes if you multiply by negative number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this it 2y>5y+9+3x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now we can rewrite this with y on left hand sign but we also need to change sign y < -x -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much for your help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

youre welcome!
