OpenStudy (kitkat16):

Please Help! What are the approximate values of the minimum and maximum points of f(x) = x^5 − 10x^3 + 9x? maximum point: (–2.4, 37.014) and minimum point: (2.4, –37.014) maximum point: (2.4, –37.014) and minimum point: (–2.4, 37.014) maximum point: (–1.4, 33.014) and minimum point: (1.4, –33.014) maximum point: (–3, 30) and minimum point: (3, –30)

OpenStudy (phi):

is this calculus ?

OpenStudy (kitkat16):

algebra

OpenStudy (phi):

you could evaluate f(x) at x= -2.4, 2.4, -1.4 , etc (i.e. the x values of the choices) and check that you get the correct y ( f(x) ) that they show.

OpenStudy (phi):

but you can rule out some choices right away. the second number in the (x,y) pair is the y value, and that is the value of f(x). the "max" value has to be bigger than other values, and the min smaller.

OpenStudy (noelgreco):

The function can be factored into five linear factors giving you five zeroes. Since you can know the end behavior of an odd-powered function you can see approximately where the maxima and minima are.
