It is not a simple answer. The lines in the spectrum represent the emission of energy from electrons falling from higher excited levels of energy to lower levels of energy. The electrons energy levels in different elements are different and depends of the number of particles (electrons, protons) in the atom. You may know that different elements have different number of electrons and protons. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohr_model#Electron_energy_levels different delta energy values will produce waves with different wavelength (wavelength= hc/E) depending from witch energy level the electron is falling will produce different patterns of bands
