Ionization of Bases, will all have OH - at the end ? For example...write a balanced equation for the ionization of the substance in water... NH3-->NH4 +OH - ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Or does OH- appear because its asking of the substance in water ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the reaction is with water \(NH_3+H_2O\rightarrow NH_4^++OH^-\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay but is this way to always write bases or is it written like this because its with water ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

it's because it's with water; there are other types of bases (lewis bases) that dont make \(OH^-\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay I see, so it relies on the question if its being asked with water or not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

suppose its not with water how would it be written ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

lol well what's it reacting with? it's usually assumed that it's being reacted with water

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for all bases will be reacting with water ? what do acids react with ?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

for all bases will be reacting with water ? nope. what do acids react with ? with bases lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks
