you must match the number and type of solutions for the following two functions in standard form. f(x) = x2 + 6x – 16 g(x) = x2 +6x + 1 Match the following descriptions of the solutions to each of the functions above. Hint: they each have their own match. Two real irrationals solutions Two real rationals solutions

@ganeshie8 help?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well you need to use the discriminant... its part of the general quadratic formula and can tell you the type of solutions you will get. the discriminant is \[\Delta = b^2 - 4ac\] in your 1st question a = 1, b = 6 and c = 16 substitute the values and calculate an answer for the discriminant then match you answer to the following conditions \[\Delta > 0\] you will have 2 unequal roots.. 1. if the answer is a perfect square the roots are real and rational. if the answer is not a perfect square the roots are real an irrational \[\Delta = 0\] you have 2 equal real and rational roots. \[\Delta < 0\] the quadratic has no real roots, only complex. hope it makes sense

@campbell_st thank you so much!

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

oops 1st question a = 1 b = 6 and c = -16... sorry for the typo

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

it makes a huge difference to the answer

thank you! @campbell_st
