Okay, so get out your periodic table. When you look at the first column you see hydrogen, lithium, sodium , potassium, etc. These guys have 1 valence electron, 1st column, one valence electron. So any element in that column would have one dot. Ex) . H Next would be Be, Mg, Ca, etc. They have two valence electrons Ex) .. Be Next would be B, Al, Ga, Ln, etc. They have three valence electrons Ex) .. Ln . Next would be C, Si, Ge, etc. They have four valence electrons. Ex) . . Ge . . This goes on until the noble gases which are entirely filled, so they have have 8 valence electrons.
