Two cars leave towns 360 kilometers apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One car's rate is 12 kilometers per hour less than the other's. If they meet in 2 hours, what is the rate of the slower car?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wow that must be the answer so some question, but it is not the answer to this one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we can do this if you like it should not be too hard

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ready?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you call one rate say \(x\) then the other rate is 12 less, so \(x-12\) for the other one since they are travelling in opposite directions, their combined rate is \[x+x-12=2x-12\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then since distance in rate times time have \[360=(2x-12)\times 2\] and you can solve that for \(x\)

Would the answer be x=96?
