why do you think the transition metals are 10 columns wide?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

for the same reason the s-block is 2 columns wide, and the p-block is 6 columns wide, the d-block is 10 columns wide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is the answer because transition metals can only hold 10 electrons

OpenStudy (jfraser):

OpenStudy (jfraser):

that particular set of orbitals (d-orbitals) can hold 2 electrons each, and there are 5 d-orbitals
