At the grocery store, Kim's pre-tax total cost is $58.75. Sale's tax is added at a rate of 4.75%. However, for this weekend only, her state is allowing the purchase of all school supplies tax-free. 20% of what Kim is purchasing is school supplies. What will her total cost be after tax is added?

OpenStudy (utterly_confuzzled):

58.75*20% gives you the untaxed amount 58.75*80% gives you the amount that you need to add tax to. Once you get the amount that needs to be taxed, multiply it by 1.0475 to give you the total for that part after tax Then, you'll add the untaxed amont to the amount you just calculated to get your answer. (58.75 * 0.2) + [1.0475 (58.75 * 0.8)] = total amount spent
