Help with system of equations?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im studying for finals! A system of equations is shown below: 8x + 5y = 9 3x + 2y = 4 Part A: Create an equivalent system of equations by replacing one equation with the sum of that equation and a multiple of the other. Show the steps to do this. Part B: Show that the equivalent system has the same solution as the original system of equations.

Is that one whole equation, or two separate equations?

Two- 8x + 5y = 9 3x + 2y = 4

To eliminate the y values, multiply the first equation by 2 and the second equation by -5. Then you get: 16x + 10y = 18 -15x - 10y = -20 Next, add the equations: 16x -15x +10y -10y = 18 -20 ==> x = -2 Finally, substitute x = -2 into either of the original equations to find y: 16(-2) + 10y = 18 ==> -32 + 10y -= 18 ==> 10y = 50 ==> y = 5 Thus, your answer would be (-2, 5).
