Help! https://vvsd6966-vvagpeap-ccl.gradpoint.com/Resource/6114359,67D,0,0,0,0,0/Assets/74794_53c6cc08/image0024e8484bd.gif The radius of the cone is 1.75 inches, and its height is 3.5 inches. If the diameter of the bubble gum ball is 0.5 inches, what is the closest approximation of the volume of the cone that can be filled with flavored ice?

OpenStudy (sleepyhead314):

hmmm that would be (Volume of Cone) minus (Volume of bubble gum ball) (volume of cone) = (1/3)(pi) r^2 h (volume of sphere) = (4/3)(pi) r^3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{1}{3}\pi (1.75)^2(3.5)-\frac{4}{3}\pi (.25)^3\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what steps do I take to solve this, instead of just giving me a formula?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Find the volume of the cone and subtract the volume of the ball

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so uh pi x 3.5 then take one third from that?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes and then multiply by the radius squared.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it comes to be 10.9955 rounded is 11 and take 1 third of it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11/3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

which is 3.6 roughly, do I round it? since it's 3.666666666666667

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mertsj

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{1}{3} \pi (1.75)^2(3.5)\] \[\frac{1}{3} \pi (3.0625)(3.5)\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{1}{3}\pi (10.71875)\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{1}{3}(3.14)(10.71875)\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{1}{3}(33.656875)=11.22\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh

OpenStudy (mertsj):

No subtract the volume of the ball from that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so its .25^2 which is 0.015625 now i take 4/3 from it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no wait multiply it by pi first then take 4/3

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{4}{3}\pi (.25)^3\]

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[\frac{4}{3}\pi (.015625)\] \[\frac{4}{3}(3.14)(.015625\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 0.0490873582..... divided by 4/3?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

\[1.3333)(3.14)(.015625)=.065\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it should be 1.3333333333333.....etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so now 11.22 - .065?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

11.155?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yes
